| Q: | Will it hurt? |
| A: | Laser procedures are painless. Powerful eye drops are used to completely numb the eye, a technique known as topical anesthesia. No needles are used. Several hours following a procedure, some patients report a slight discomfort that is typically is well tolerated. Tylenol usually helps adequately. |
| Q: | What if I blink during the procedure? |
| A: | It is impossible to blink during a laser procedure. A specially designed instrument is used to gently hold the eyelids open. Because eye drops have already completely numbed the eye, the reflex that gives you the desire to blink is lost, so keeping the eye open is painless. |
| Q: | Can I get an Infection? |
| A: | Infections following laser procedures are remarkably rare. Worldwide, the reported rates vary from 1 in 5,000 (.0002) to 1 in 10,000 (.0001). In contrast, the rate of infection associated with the use of extended wear contact lenses is approximately 2 in 100. |
| Q: | How soon can I resume normal activities? |
| A: | More than 90% of patients have both eyes done at the same time. Most patients are able to drive the next day and resume normal activities on the second day. Rigorous physical activities including swimming, should be avoided for one week. |
